How to Incorporate Facial Oils into Your Skincare Routine

Posted by Katherine Spowart on 17th Oct 2020

Let’s be honest, facial oils are perhaps one of the most intimidating products in the skincare world. In my personal experience, this stemmed from a solid fear of an oily face during my teenage years, and that fear transcended to an uncertainty about facial oils as I delved into skincare in my twenties. But when I actually tried them? The glow and nourishment of my skin means I have never looked back, and I always have several oils in my skincare wardrobe.

In today’s post, we’re going to break down the different ways you can use a facial oil and I’ll share my favourite oil products. Let’s get into it, because one of these tips could be oil you’re missing from your skincare routine..!

Mixed with a moisturizer

If you’ve never used an oil before, this is an awesome way to start. Add a couple of drops of oil to a scoop of moisturizer and warm together in your hands to mix. Press into your face and moisturize as normal. My skin always benefits from this method because the added oil helps the skin absorb more moisture by preventing water loss. This helps target dehydration, dryness and flaky skin.

As a final step

As I’ve just mentioned, using an oil helps prevent water loss from your skin, thus keeping your face hydrated and well moisturized. This makes oil a fantastic final step of an evening skincare routine, to help lock in all the moisture you have already applied. You don’t need to use much oil to achieve this- simply a couple of drops warmed in the palm of your hands and pressed on your skin will create a sealing layer. I ALWAYS wake up to a glow with this method.

For Facial Massage

This is one of my favourite ways to use a facial oil. Facial massage can help relieve tension, encourage relaxation, drain the lymphatic system, reduce puffiness, and generally promote bright, firm skin. I apply a reasonable amount of oil to my face and then use a Gua Sha tool to do massage. There are many different tutorials on YouTube to help you get started and you don’t necessarily need a tool. I enjoy using an oil because it prevents dragging on the skin and creates a sensory, calming experience.

Body Care

If you have an oil and you find you’re only using small amounts on your face, I personally use the oil on other areas of my body too. I get extremely dry skin on my heels and toes, so I often pat a little oil into those areas. During winter, I will occasionally use the smallest amount on the ends of my hair- just make sure to go lightly! I also enjoy adding a couple of drops to a body moisturizer to help target flaky, itchy skin.

I have several favourite oils but the two I reach for regularly are the Olivarrier Fluid Oil Squalane, which I first tried in 2017, and more recently, I’ve been indulging in Beigic Regenerative Oil.

Olivarrier’s vegan Squalane Oil was the first oil I had ever tried and is an ideal option for beginners because it is relatively light, quick-absorbing, fragrance free and suitable for all skin types.

Beigic’s luxurious oil contains a beautiful blend of argan, jojoba, rosehip, and almond oils and is such an enjoyable product for deep nourishment.

What’s your favourite oil and how do you use it?
